Suit Up in Our Favorite Work Wear

What to Wear to Work

There are two great times during the calender year in which to slip into a new self: early fall (ingrained in our psyche from years of first days of school) and January (the start of the new year.)

As 2014 wrapped up so did many work and school projects. Now with the holidays behind us many of us find ourselves on unbroken ground. What is the next step and, as we prepare to take it, how shall we present ourselves?

Business Attire for Women

magenta_coat-2

It’s hard not to look towards media for inspirations for our wardrobes now and then. This is a brilliant idea for any Minx stuck in a rut or any Minx looking to shake their style up a bit.

This outfit gives a hearty nod to both the Madmen era of office wear, with this fabulous bright pink jacket, and to the 9 to 5 era, with the deep blue blouse and black tailored trousers. All offices are different and business attire comes in many different styles, but what Minx wouldn’t love to channel Joan or Dolly while choosing what to wear to work?

Office Wear as a Functional Costume

Sometimes we need a suit of armor before we go out into the world. When the stakes are raised, as they are when our professional or academic persona is on display, then the need for a impenetrable suit of armor is in even higher demand than usual.

magenta_coat-5

Pretend for a moment, if you will, that you have been cast in a play as Valkyrie. Imagine striding out onto stage, lights blaring in your eyes. A wall of hidden critics just on the other side of the curtain of blackness that hides the audience form view. “Be a Valkyrie” is your only direction, but you are in your normal cloths and you feel nothing like a Valkyrie. Now mentally dawn your Valkyrie costume: busty full length dress, braids as thick as your wrist hanging down to your waist, and a great horned hat. The hat is so heavy with metal and horns that you must walk erect just to keep from collapsing under its weight. Add a spear and shield and suddenly it is perfectly easy to believe that you are on your way to Valhalla!

magenta_coat-3

This is the power of clothes, why we love them and hate them. They create an energy around us. Clothes are an extension of our inner selves. Every Minx knows that they are not a simple one dimensional self, they are multi layered. A well built wardrobe expresses all of your sides. Don’t let your work self suffer from hastily chosen or safe options for the office. Let this winter be the time you consciously choose how to let your work wear strategically help mold your professional look. Carefully explore how presenting the true you in the office you can positively change your work experience!

What to Wear on New Years Day

New Years Breakfast Outfit

After you count down the New Year, drink the token champaign, and eat your good luck marzipan pig (google this tradition if it is new to you) you will have arrived in the year 2015. What will 2015 hold in store for you? For your wardrobe? Make New Years Day brunch plans now, so that you and yours can ponder these questions together.

There is a thought that you should spend your New Years Day engaged in the activities that you want to emulate for your coming year. Minx encourages you to go one step further, and dress in the style that you want to adopt for 2015.

French Connection Dress

A New Years Day breakfast outfit needs to be straightforward (who knows how late you were up last night!) and solidly beautiful (like you.) This is a time to recover with some coffee and toast. This is not a time to attempt overly fussy ensembles or go overboard with accessories.

fcuk_wing_dress-5

This French Connection dress is both easy to wear and beautifully feminine. The pattern of abstracted birds creates an illusion that the jewel toned feathers are perhaps organically belonging to the wearer as opposed to simply the pattern of the dress. There is that sense on the first day of the New Year that anything is possible. Let a dress covered in wings help usher you towards your new journey.

The simplicity of a short, tailored dress in the winter begs to be paired with tights (you can never go wrong with black tights) and a great shoe. Don’t underestimate the power that a shoe has over your outfit. We have chosen a low boot because it instantly makes the outfit practical and fashionable. Have fun with your shoe choice. Try a taller boot, flats, or a heel to customize the look to fit your wants and needs.

The Faux Shearling Jacket by Numph

fcuk_wing_dress-1

Let’s not forget that it’s only the first of the year and still cold out! This faux shearling jacket from Denmark’s own Numph creates a fantastical addition to this New Years Day breakfast look. Numph prides themselves on creating fashions that both accommodate the practical side of our daytime lives with the glitz and fantasy of our nighttime lives. Brunch is an in between time, blending those two worlds together for one brief and magical meal.

Imagine running into your breakfast venue, perhaps a bit late. Your friends are already seated around the table. They are excited to see you so that you can all share the stories form your New Years Eve parties. Before you sit, you slip your fairy tale shearling jacket off revealing your immaculate dress of feathers. You are transformed, you are freshly made for the next chapter of your life, fresh for the New Year!

Your Perfect Winter Wedding Look

What to Wear to a Winter Wedding

The days are still growing shorter and the nights longer. In retaliation, we light candles and string up Christmas lights to keep the darkness at bay. This is the time of year that brings to mind Wendell Berry’s poem “To Know The Dark.” The first two lines read: To go in the dark with a light is to know the light. To know the dark, go dark. Often when we search for clothing for the holiday season we are looking to color to cheer us and help shepherd us towards the spring. However, sometimes we can find peace in accepting this darker time of year without it bringing us down. Sometimes the color black is the most serene and empowered choice that we can make in December.

Black Lace Gown

This black lace gown is a perfect pick for a black tie event, a special night out at the theater, or a formal winter wedding. You will strike a chord of drama without being too dramatic. Rather, you will stand out as classic and feminine with a hint of vintage Dior. The slim fit through the hips is amazingly flattering on multiple body types. This dress certainly does not run skimp on lace and grosgrain ribbon and has truly earned the title of gown.

Black Tie Wedding

It can be difficult to know what to wear to a wedding, any wedding, much less a black tie wedding. Often it is hard to find a gown conservative enough without being too conservative. The high neckline of this black lace dress helps set a formal tone while at the same time heightening the elegant effect that the deep scooped back creates. When a design comes along that celebrates the shoulder blades and spine deserves to be recognized.

What to Wear to a Winter Wedding

Extasia Jewelry

The Extasia necklace completes our winter formal look. The Extasia line will be at home in every Minx’s jewelry box. This necklace is actually carved out of certified fossil ivory from ancient mammoth deposits: what? How is that possible? Who would know how to procure such fantasies? Extasia does and they have made a name for themselves by creating brilliant designs along this highly imaginative vein. This exquisite line blends classic jewelry design with current fashion trends and sets itself apart with its expert attention to craftsmanship.

Finally, we have rounded out our ensemble with a faux fur scarf for warmth and a luxurious nod towards the vixens of the silver screen.

Also, if you have started wondering what to wear on New Years Eve, one would look quite natural sipping champagne while wearing this black lace gown!

Piko Tops and Our Favorite Coated Skinny Jeans

Want to know what we’re wearing this winter? A couple of key mix and match pieces have been in nearly constant rotation around Minx.

1. Piko Tops-

You’ve heard it before. And we’ll say it again. We love Piko Tops!

Piko Tops are comfortable, soft, stylish, and forgiving. Made from a bamboo and spandex blend, these tops are even softer than your favorite jersey sheets, which, on especially dreary mornings, is a requirement. Our Piko tops are available in a range of colors and styles, from basic grey to electric blue, so there’s a look that works for everyone.

We’ve worn them with shorts, blazers, and leggings. And now, with a comfy sweater on top, we’re wearing them all winter long. Already a fan? Make sure to read our crucial care tips to keep your Piko looking tip-top!

For those days that even your coolest jeans don’t cut it, these faux leather coated skinny jeans are perfect! The best part of all? They’re only $39!

Need a second opinion? Our friend Emily has been rocking her Faux Leather Coated Skinny Jeans on her blog, Life With Emily! Check it out for some fantastic style inspiration!

3. Cozy Knit Accessories

Piling on the knitwear is an easy way to add a little texture and a lot of warmth to your outfit. Invest in a couple key pieces, like a beautiful cashmere beanie or an infinity scarf, and mix and match them all season long. If you’re looking for daily wear, opt for neutral shades. Or, pick a rich jewel tone to add some color to the winter.

Holiday Outfits, Part 1- How to Wear Sequins

Are you looking for the perfect holiday party outfit? Check out some of our favorite party outfit ideas!

Can you believe that we’re already halfway through November?! As we barrel towards the holiday season, there is a growing flutter of excitement around Minx. As your calendar fills up with winter events and holiday parties, we’re filling the store with sequin skirts, glitter, and gold.

Need something for a casual holiday look? Or, are you interested in a drop-dead-gorgeous-head-turning formal gown? Want to know what to wear with a sequined skirt? Or, are you just in need of a little holiday fashion inspiration? Whatever your need may be, we’ve got it figured out and we’re excited to share!

How to Wear Sequins

Once again, sequins are right on trend for the 2014 holiday season. Maybe it’s their ability to make anyone feel like a movie star, or just because they’re so eye catching, but sequins are definitely one of our favorite things about holiday fashion. So, how do you wear sequins without going overboard?

Dolce Vita Gibsin Sneakers / Holiday Outfit/ Sequin Skirt OutfitTry Sequined Separates!

With all the glamour of a full sequined dress, but the versatility to mix and match, this look is definitely one of our favorite holiday outfit ideas.

Looking for more casual holiday look? Separates give you tons of options for different way to wear them. Wear the top with simple pencil skirt, or the skirt with a silk blouse. Or, try a contrasting print! Throw on jeans or a leather jacket- the sequins add a lovely feminine and eye-catching touch to any outfit.

We love the stark contrast of Dolce Vita’s minimal Gibisin Sneakers with the ornate sequined suit. Don’t be afraid to try out new combinations!  Just remember, with such eye catching sparkle keep your accessories minimal so your outfit can be the shining star.

Update Your Basics with Cheap Monday’s Shelly Chip Shirt

Around Minx, the office “dress code” is a challenge we enthusiastically accept. Our workplace is often a showcase of the latest trends, favorite designers, and new acquisitions- the perfect place to show off our individual style among like-minded fashionistas. Our office is always pushing the limits of work-wear (tutu’s and motorcycle jackets on a Monday? How better to start the week!), but, like any workplace, there are certain standards to uphold.

Even though dressing in our frilliest, sexiest, most fashion-y fashion will always be fun, the workplace often calls for something else. Maybe your 9-5 isn’t the runway for sequined tuxedo pants and leather t-shirts, but does that mean that you can’t look forward to getting dressed for work? Why has dressing for success come to mean bland basics and stuffy suits?

Guess what? There is another way!

We’re always on the lookout for unusual basics and clever staples- familiar silhouettes with a bit of personality.

Bored of your blouses? How about a beautiful (and office appropriate) silk T-shirt?  Over your outerwear? Switch things up with a longer blazer!  Whether your office is an ultra-conservative operation, or a little more relaxed, updated basics are an easy way to liven up your look and allow your personality to peek through!

Want to know what are we wearing to work?

Sporty Chic in a Luxe Sweatshirt by Cheap Monday

The time has come to reintroduce you to one of our favorite recurring fall trends- luxe sweatshirts!

We firmly believe that even the most posh and sophisticated women have those days where comfort, above all else, is top priority. Not so long ago, comfy days were spent hiding away, home alone with your pets, for fear of being seen in grubby old loungewear. But those days are long gone! Come out, come out, fashion savvy women of the world and say hello to your new best friend- the glam sweatshirt!

We’ve finally arrived at the intersection of fashion and comfort- a mythical place where clothing is stylish and cozy! And believe us, comfort is worth celebrating. As we all know, when you feel good in what you’re wearing, you look great in what you’re wearing!

Cheap Monday SweatshirtChic sweatshirts come in many forms: sometimes lacy, often graphic, but always comfortable, these tops are what we’ve so longed for!

We’re loving this one from Cheap Monday; classic in material and color, but with an interesting (and literal) twist.

Paired with a maxi skirt and sunglasses, this look is perfect for a trendy brunch spot. Say your breakfast turns into a full day adventure? Terrific! Throw on a leather jacket, a cool backpack, and you’re ready to go without skipping a beat.
