Make A Day of It

We hear it all the time – “I’m not a hat girl.” Or “I can ONLY wear skinny jeans.” Or “I just don’t want to draw attention to myself.” We understand having a reliable uniform and we understand the comforting feeling of wardrobe staples and go-to’s. In fact, they are an incredibly important part of building personal style. At the same time, its also easy to box ourselves into a comfort zone and start giving ourselves fashion rules that let us get away with self-deprecating thoughts and mantras. At Minx, we love gently encouraging our customers, and OURSELVES, to try something they never have (or have before and weren’t feeling at the time!) and start challenging these self-imposed fashion rules with empowerment being the ultimate goal. So –  toss on a hat, try out a bold print, or come grab that white button-down you’ve been eyeing that will always fit just right. Either way – we are here and we are in your corner!

Floral Print, ADA Belts, and Mani Designs

It’s Spring right? No, wait it’s snowing out! Oh well: when the world won’t bring a Minx flowers a Minx will have to bring flowers to the world! It’s true that delicate petals will freeze and wither during the winter months. Even flowers reproduced in fabric designs and prints can seem pale and out of place amongst the leather and wool landscape of February.

Still, that hopeful longing for Spring has crept into our bones. We are on a mission for blooming, leafy fashion. We have found some hearty varieties of botanical inspired adornment that can withstand the dim light of the low winter sun, and strengthen our hearts with the promise of Spring!

Ada Obi Wrap BeltThis floral dress can stand up to a winter debut because of its deep blue background, and rich texture of fabric and pattern. These elements ground it within the winter season. The pleating at the neck gives it a depth and weight that adds a complementary juxtaposition with the fun and flirty skirt length. To finish off the look pair this floral gem with a cardigan, a wrap belt, and your favorite Mani Design studs!

Have you met Mani Designs?

If you want to add some more botanical elements to your pre-Spring look there is no better place than local designer Amber Mahler’s jewelry line. Originally from California, Mahler has studied the local flora of Western North Carolina with a true artist’s passion. All the designs are cast from natural forms found on the designers walks. Her botanical collection is comprised of everything from blueberries to flowers to delicate sticks. These small wonders from nature are then cast in silver and gold plated silver to create jewelry straight out of collective imagination of the realm of fairy tales.

Back to the Office in Our Business Casual Wear

Business Casual for Women

Within any Minx’s work wardrobe there is array of subtle personality shifts and levels of professional formality. We dress depending on our anticipated day: will there be an important meeting? Will we be dashing from work to a date, to the grocery store, to the airport? Will it be a high powered day at work or a laid back and more casual one?

Optimus Prime Gave Us this Mission for Our Work Wardrobe

Transformer Sweater, THML

There is very little that can compete with the understated elegance of a pullover sweater. Here we have our Transformer pullover sweater. It is fun, fresh and functional! The geometric, four tone, color block design creates the perfect combination of modern edge and classic nostalgia.

Transformer Sweater, THML

Pullover sweaters looks great with trousers and skirts that hit at the natural waistline. They are just as easily paired with a lower rise bottom when layered over a oxford style shirt, tunic, or under layer tank or tee. We love the pullover sweater to go over a short dress as well, as we highlighted in our recent post about how to build a wardrobe. The diversity of styles that this pullover sweater can achieve, not to mention the striking resemblance that the geometric design has with Optimus Prime’s emblem, truly makes this the Transformer sweater!

How to Put Together a Business Casual Outfit

Sheer Tori Tunic, Fun 2 Fun

What is really meant by business casual? There is no one definitive answer. However, there are some basic guidelines that we stand behind. One cringes against the perfunctory image of Hawaiian Shirt Fridays. Or does one? Good food for thought: how to update the Hawaiian shirt. Let’s file that away for now, put it under the category: the fun fashion challenge we bestow upon all you Minxs. But, in all seriousness, casual work attire can truly only be a few notches down the causal ladder from everyday work attire.

Again, The Importance of Shoes for Office Fashion

Let us not forget how paramount shoes are to any outfit. Ultimately, what image your outfit conveys hinges on what shoes accompany it. Even when we wish this wasn’t true: it is.

Here we have our work causal attire paired with slip-on sneakers. It conveys more of a weekend appeal in truth. Even if your work attire is causal, a Minx might want to make a slightly more professional statement with her shoes. Perhaps flats. Not a huge change in comfort, but quite noticeable in perception.

Gibsin Perforated Sneakers, Dolce Vita

Then, as a Minx heads out of work, and off on a weekender adventure, she can reach into her overstuffed and always loyal shoulder bag, and swap out the flats for her trusty sneakers.

Locked and loaded this Minx is ready for her work casual look to transform. Like Optimus Prime, she is ready to duck out of her giant robot form and sink into the comfort of her semi truck form as she tears down the highways into the glow of the Friday evening sun!

Suit Up in Our Favorite Work Wear

What to Wear to Work

There are two great times during the calender year in which to slip into a new self: early fall (ingrained in our psyche from years of first days of school) and January (the start of the new year.)

As 2014 wrapped up so did many work and school projects. Now with the holidays behind us many of us find ourselves on unbroken ground. What is the next step and, as we prepare to take it, how shall we present ourselves?

Business Attire for Women

magenta_coat-2

It’s hard not to look towards media for inspirations for our wardrobes now and then. This is a brilliant idea for any Minx stuck in a rut or any Minx looking to shake their style up a bit.

This outfit gives a hearty nod to both the Madmen era of office wear, with this fabulous bright pink jacket, and to the 9 to 5 era, with the deep blue blouse and black tailored trousers. All offices are different and business attire comes in many different styles, but what Minx wouldn’t love to channel Joan or Dolly while choosing what to wear to work?

Office Wear as a Functional Costume

Sometimes we need a suit of armor before we go out into the world. When the stakes are raised, as they are when our professional or academic persona is on display, then the need for a impenetrable suit of armor is in even higher demand than usual.

magenta_coat-5

Pretend for a moment, if you will, that you have been cast in a play as Valkyrie. Imagine striding out onto stage, lights blaring in your eyes. A wall of hidden critics just on the other side of the curtain of blackness that hides the audience form view. “Be a Valkyrie” is your only direction, but you are in your normal cloths and you feel nothing like a Valkyrie. Now mentally dawn your Valkyrie costume: busty full length dress, braids as thick as your wrist hanging down to your waist, and a great horned hat. The hat is so heavy with metal and horns that you must walk erect just to keep from collapsing under its weight. Add a spear and shield and suddenly it is perfectly easy to believe that you are on your way to Valhalla!

magenta_coat-3

This is the power of clothes, why we love them and hate them. They create an energy around us. Clothes are an extension of our inner selves. Every Minx knows that they are not a simple one dimensional self, they are multi layered. A well built wardrobe expresses all of your sides. Don’t let your work self suffer from hastily chosen or safe options for the office. Let this winter be the time you consciously choose how to let your work wear strategically help mold your professional look. Carefully explore how presenting the true you in the office you can positively change your work experience!

What to Wear on New Years Day

New Years Breakfast Outfit

After you count down the New Year, drink the token champaign, and eat your good luck marzipan pig (google this tradition if it is new to you) you will have arrived in the year 2015. What will 2015 hold in store for you? For your wardrobe? Make New Years Day brunch plans now, so that you and yours can ponder these questions together.

There is a thought that you should spend your New Years Day engaged in the activities that you want to emulate for your coming year. Minx encourages you to go one step further, and dress in the style that you want to adopt for 2015.

French Connection Dress

A New Years Day breakfast outfit needs to be straightforward (who knows how late you were up last night!) and solidly beautiful (like you.) This is a time to recover with some coffee and toast. This is not a time to attempt overly fussy ensembles or go overboard with accessories.

fcuk_wing_dress-5

This French Connection dress is both easy to wear and beautifully feminine. The pattern of abstracted birds creates an illusion that the jewel toned feathers are perhaps organically belonging to the wearer as opposed to simply the pattern of the dress. There is that sense on the first day of the New Year that anything is possible. Let a dress covered in wings help usher you towards your new journey.

The simplicity of a short, tailored dress in the winter begs to be paired with tights (you can never go wrong with black tights) and a great shoe. Don’t underestimate the power that a shoe has over your outfit. We have chosen a low boot because it instantly makes the outfit practical and fashionable. Have fun with your shoe choice. Try a taller boot, flats, or a heel to customize the look to fit your wants and needs.

The Faux Shearling Jacket by Numph

fcuk_wing_dress-1

Let’s not forget that it’s only the first of the year and still cold out! This faux shearling jacket from Denmark’s own Numph creates a fantastical addition to this New Years Day breakfast look. Numph prides themselves on creating fashions that both accommodate the practical side of our daytime lives with the glitz and fantasy of our nighttime lives. Brunch is an in between time, blending those two worlds together for one brief and magical meal.

Imagine running into your breakfast venue, perhaps a bit late. Your friends are already seated around the table. They are excited to see you so that you can all share the stories form your New Years Eve parties. Before you sit, you slip your fairy tale shearling jacket off revealing your immaculate dress of feathers. You are transformed, you are freshly made for the next chapter of your life, fresh for the New Year!
